About
Most of my work as a performance artist has been about the journey but this blog is about having arrived. In loftier words, this blog is about ‘being’. I’ve been so focused for so long on plowing ahead and moving forward against all odds that I’d like to think of DuneLight as a place to plant myself, send down roots and reach towards the light.
My life has been a relentless forward march. I’m gonna move sideways for awhile.
Nice pics, Kim!
Thank you! It took me a couple of days to reason out how to reply. I’m just learning my way around. Thanks for your kindness and patience!
What a great blog you have! Love your header! Thanks for following The World according to Dina, it’s highly appreciated.

thanks for you lovely comment on Following Sister Moon. I am on wordpress too these days so this is me – sister moon 🙂
Beautiful photography here!
You are more than welcome and thank you!
I do like plants growing on sand dunes… their long, strong roots allow them to be soft with the wind. It’s something really zen, like your pictures. Thank you for sending a root down to my blog and calling me here!
You are very kind. I enjoyed your photos of the gardens and parks. I do not read Italian but speaking Spanish and having sung a lot of Italian art songs and opera arias helped me understand a little of your blog. Thank you.
🙂
Nice that you looked at my blog
Greetings from Sweden
Thanks for following ZimmerBitch. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your photos and reading your posts.
You are more than welcome.
That’s it. To spend some time looking outside instead of at inner drives. Opening all senses to appreciate what is already there and then perhaps to create some more. Very good luck with this endeavour, it is a worthy one. 🐻
Better sideways than backways! 🙂
I do not think I would like backways!
Sounds like a good plan.
🙂
My dad’s family built a cottage in White Lake on Lake Michigan back in the late ’40s. I have loved vacations there and the quality of the light, sunsets and quiet days since I was a toddler. My kids count it as one of their favorite places in the world as well…and maybe not too long from now, another generation might emerge and grow to love it, too. It is a magical place, and I hope it changes at the slowest pace possible.
I LOVE that area. I first discovered it doing professional Summer Stock at the Howmet. So much has changed already with the advent of Southern Florida style condos going up on both sides of the causeway. The magical light, however, pretty much remains. 🙂 I sub volunteer at the White River Lighthouse sometimes. Perhaps I’ll meet you there. Thanks for visiting the blog.
Thanks for be a great surprise today :-), I’m glad to find your art, I can feel a message in every photograph and the sense of discovering when you shot them, that things that happens sometimes just once. Kind regards, Francis.
You are more than welcome. I stumbled upon your blog when I was random browsing and was immediately enchanted with your photo essays about your home. It is so different from my home and what I know but also very beautiful. I can see your reverence for your home in your photos.
Thank you n_n, although I’d prefer to consider it love more than reverence; the latter in excess can separate instead of unite. The beauty in your photographs also will be my home because I love the light in them too.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I like your blog a lot. It seems very peaceful here! Helen
Thank you! Some might say that in the winter it is almost too peaceful. 🙂
Thank you for your kind comment on my blog. It’s very nice to meet you. 🙂
You are more than welcome and it is lovely to meet you. I hope the rest of January is filled with comfort, strength and light.
Great ‘about page’ metaphorical statement… I’m glad that you have reached your destination, which is easily noticeable by the number of photos with light house 🙂 I wish you all the best during this part or stage in life, Cheers from Ireland, Swav
Thank you! I enjoyed your art. It brightened up these gray West Michigan days.
You are welcome… the journey is always connected with variety of experiences in life… some people see the rain outside the window and think or hesitate, while other ones are ready for good craic (fun) out there somewhere 🙂 cheers
ciao! luvFAB blog.

🙂 Thank you!
Hi Dunelight. May I wish you well. Thank you so much for liking my poems ‘ Beast and Rusting Ship!’ Also your great comment on Rusting ship!. It is so kind of you to want to follow my poetry adventures. Peace and Best wishes. The Foureyed Poet.
You are welcome.
Thank you for visiting my site. Your photography is breathtaking! You have an amazing gift of capturing light. Love your caption “I’m going to move sideways for a while.” This is a place where I find myself lately and it feels wonderful. Looking forward to viewing more of your work.
Thank you, I worked so hard to get here I forgot to enjoy the ride. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by my blog and your comments
You are more than welcome. I have been so busy during other times of the year I felt the ‘cabin fever’ month of February was the best time to get out and digitally explore the blogosphere. I stumbled on your blog today and thought you have a naturally good eye. You won’t always need to imitate others because what you see is interesting. It will be fun to watch you grow as an artist as you learn more of the craft and tools.
That sounds like an interesting journey.
It has been.
Would love to see you grow as you spread the light. Nice to meet you! 🙂
Thank you for the lovely sentiment.
THanks for visiting my blog and leading me to yours. What a beautiful surprise! Your pictures are so inspiring, the light… the light…! Some lights remind me of my favorite painter, Edward Hopper. Thanks for sharing your awesome pictures, I am very happy to follow your blog 🙂
Thank you for your kindness. I too enjoyed the insight into your world.
I see that you have been a visitor..Thank you so much!
You are more than welcome. I enjoy experiencing others’ view on their world and life.
Same here!
ThaNow for stopping by my blog and commenting on my image of the oil train. For some reason, my reply to your comment there keeps failing to send. Curious. In any case, it has given me a chane to hang out on your site for a bit. Thanks again!
You are more than welcome. I found the oil train shot’s pattern, lines, movement very interesting.
Looks like a celebration of life and living in the moment blog. Best wishes, Paula
I am reaching towards that very thing. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog! 🙂 I love your space, so sunny and bright. You were right about the quality of light, it’s simply amazing … and you capture it well. You have a very inspiring blog and I will definitely be checking in often.
Thank you. 🙂
“Moving sideways”………..I really like that idea. 🙂
We get so involved in moving straight ahead to achieve goals we forget to enjoy the trip. 🙂
Thank you so much for visiting my blog. You have an interesting blog with amazing collection of photos.
Thank you and you are more than welcome. I enjoyed visiting your blog. I guess my blog couldn’t decide whether it was to be a photo blog or a blog about place, West Michigan. It is a blend.
Love this! And your photography and explanations are sensitive — showing your passion for the land. Just a wonderful site. Thanks for stopping by and Drought. I’m new to poetry writing (February) and relatively new to blogging too (March). Have found the Return Policy wonderful in this world — as in someone Likes something I’ve written, and I can go to their site to meet them — so many wonderful introductions to people with passion for the word, art, photography and life. Reminds me of my One Sentence Poem, Home at Sea. 🙂
Hope you’ll meander by again…..have been away for the weekend so having my glass of wine with my meander time…..usually I meet up with folks over my morning cup of coffee!
lillian
I too love to ‘travel the world’ with a morning cup. Coffee’s brewing now. Nice to meet you. 🙂
Thanks for visiting me.. and so happy to have found your blog.
Wonderful images and a fun sense of humor! Love it 🙂
I have been meaning to comment on your header for sometime now – I love it! My husband and daughter are sailors & I wonder if you sail too?? Again, a beautiful capture for your header!
Thank you and yes! I have spent most of my life far away from water. There were two Yacht clubs and several marinas along with countless launch sites and miles of public beaches here in Muskegon that figured large in our choice to move here. Other towns were ‘posher’ or more upscale but did not have the sheer amount of water access we have here. Also, we do not have the mind boggling tourist traffic those other towns have. The first thing we did upon moving this close to Lake Michigan was join the local yacht club. I signed up for classes and the last two summers we have been crewing out on racing yachts. A boat is in our future but right now we are learning all we can. We are hooked. 🙂
I know it’s a dichotomy but now that I no longer have to drive 3 hours round trip to get to the beach I go more often and use what once was travel time to putter in the perennial gardens. It is the best blend to grow things then go kayak or surf. Do you go out with your family?
Your community sounds just lovely! Yes, we sail as a family. But since we have two skippers in the family, someone needs to crew! I am happily ballast these days. Surfing and sailing go well together too: on days with no wind & no sailing, the waves are nice and glassy; big wind means choppy surf but fun sailing. It works out for us all!
I understand your dichotomy – as much as I love the ocean, I love to dig in the earth and to visit others gardens too!
Unfortunately, SoCal and mind boggling traffic go hand in hand, especially in the summer. When my husbands job moved, we moved to be closer to his work. And while we can walk many wonderful places from our home, we are still learning to deal with living in a place so heavily visited in the summer. We find peace near and on the water =) I’d love to read about your sailing adventures sometime…there is always a great story from sailing! have a Happy 4th! Tiare
We crew out now but a boat is in our future so no real stories other than race stories. I hear you about the skipper thing. Right now we mostly crew separate boats on Wednesday nights and it works well. 😀
The big Lake is finally warm enough that I’m getting my boogie board out of the basement. We do not get pretty sets or tubes. You can surf it if you have a will. Right now Kite Surfing is really big. Those oh so common double topped peaks of ours aren’t a problem if you can launch off of them and grab air time.
I love the race stories! I completely understand the separate boats: we took a sailing class together…once, just once. Kite surfing is huge here too – I haven’t tried it though. Our summer swell has been nonexistent, but the winds have been fairly decent for this time of year. Have a great 4th of July & Happy Sailing!
🙂
wow you have a beautiful blog and some amazing pictures. I am on board with you towards the journey to north 🙂 Keep writing xx

Thank you for your kind words and the follow. 🙂

Thanks for visiting my blog “mazeepuran” and appreciating my trials! You have a wonderful blog. I wish you enjoy every shade of light in your life 🙂
You are more than welcome. And thank you too!
Thank you so much for visiting “you inspire me” and the likes. I have used your blog as inspiration for post #84 which is scheduled for Jan 21st and linked back to you. I hope you enjoy it! I am looking forward to exploring your work further.
You are more than welcome. I am always curious about the world of others and so look forward to your post!
Hi Dunelight. I was in scheduling frenzy and got my dates mixed up. Sorry! The post inspired by you is Jan 24th Post #87. I hope you like it. It is one of my all time favourites.
🙂
I liked your comment on the light of Michigan. My hometown, Dordrecht, is also famous for its light and painters like Whistler and Turner loved to come here because of that. What’s more, it is true, many times I look out of the window or go and walk along the river just to admire the light. And take photos, of course.
It sounds lovely. 🙂
Just wonderfully said “..about being ..and reaching towards the light.” I think that maybe everyone should have such a “place” in their life, a place to just go to and.. be. As for the light, well.. that may somehow happen naturally when we focus less on do..ing and hav..ing, I think. Anyway, it feels like a beautiful haven, your blog.
Thank you, in providing haven for others I find haven for myself.
lovely idea and pictures. I like many of your pictures and the ones of the ‘gates of hell’ at the Rodin museum, Philadelphia being my home town.
Thank you, Philly rocks! I long to go back.
Thank you so much for visiting my Blog so I can find you. Your story and page is interesting. The moment I saw your Header image then I knew that you love life, vibrant adventures and having deep insights about journey. I would love to get to know you more through your posts. Thank you for leaving enough likes on my page as well.
Regards from Germany!
Thank you for your kind words. I set out to show why my corner of the world is unique…but I am so interested in so many things it is hard to stay on that tack.
Sideways, indeed. Kudos on taking that lovely/foreign/terrifying road less traveled.
It is the more interesting journey. 🙂
Hello Dunelight, I found your blog through a friends and saw that you were a performer. What did you do, or still do? You are very right about always focusing on the future and how it is much more important to enjoy the now. I have learnt that from a recent injury I had. I have so many wonderful things around me it should not be only looking for what more I could have in the future.
I also saw you great pictures and think the sailing looks fantastic! My husband and I may be giving it a go next summer with family friends! Fingers crossed it works out.
Thank you for sharing and I look forward to find out more about your moving sideways xx Harriet
Heavens above, this was lost. I remember setting this aside because I wanted to spend more time in talking with you. I am so sorry.
I am not sure that non-performance people understand how much injuries affect our careers. We are very much like pro-athletes. I worked as professional actor/singer/dancer(not a good dancer)/musician etc. I had a lot of fun but each progressive injury and/or health problem kept setting me back to the point where I had to give it up due to a persisting limp from an unstable SI joint. I had also worked as an artist in the schools and that progressed into, “Heck, why don’t I teach regularly?” Which I LOVED..but life happens. As I was struggling to come back from the SI injury I was blindsided by a series of more serious health problems. I could not do my job as I was and I couldn’t change jobs as no one hires the handicapped. I was flat on my back for too many years struggling to get back to movement and life and viability. I fought hard, I fought for my health and you do have to be your own pushy health advocate. It was a dark journey for years, this struggle with physical handicaps, and it was tainted by society’s treatment of the handicapped.
I decided I had one life and I wanted to spend at least part of that life on the beach/near the beach, on water. I was in a lovely place but far from town, the beach and other people. It was very difficult to get out and about. My spouse was resistant at first but I moved mountains to make this move to the shore happen. I literally came here to the dunes thinking I could then just die by my much loved Lake Michigan but the surprise and joy is that the dunes gave back a lot of my life. Walking on the beach, being surrounded by neighbors who get you out and about, living in town made getting around MUCH easier, taking up sailing with people who took me as I was, and then sailing…racing..that was as good as pilates/yoga. I’ll never be as able as I was, but I’m far, far better and physically stronger than I was 5 years ago.
I am so thankful. I worked so hard to get here. How where you injured?
I love it! I need to do more sideways stepping myself.
Hi there, I just wanted to tell you I have nominated you to take part in the ‘3 Days 3 Quote Challenge’. If you want to give it a go here is the link to mine where the rules are stated. Have fun xxx https://aballetoflife.com/2017/01/04/the-3-days-3-quote-challenge/
Thank you! I’m laying around with my cats and spouse listening to the birds sing outside the windows. I need more coffee before I can do this.
amazing photos 🙂
Thank you, I am a visual person. 🙂
Moving sideways sounds good. How’s it turned out?
Made me think of Chuck Berry, though his was not sideways…
I am healing well and so it is time to update my ‘about’. I moved forward a bit since coming here, moved into sailing as that was a life long dream.
Was going to go up the coast this morning as this late summer day is absolutely glorious but .. I’m sick with fall allergies. First rule of sailing, don’t fall off the boat.
Good to hear that you are healing from whatever ailment you had. Sometimes it takes a while. 🙂
Also glad to be back in touch. I was thinking about you the other day, that I hadn’t heard from you in a while. (My fault, my blogging has been a bit irregular for a while. Other wounds to heal) So I am glad to reconnect.
And, yes, (I have done a bit of sailing) never fall of the boat. I remember a whole day during weeks of sailing lessons dedicated to capsizing. Again and again… My wife didn’t like it that much, but I saw the point. Be good.
