IMG_9743 Snowman with Fall Leaves

“It snowed last year too: I made a snowman and my brother knocked it down and I knocked my brother down and then we had tea.”

~ Dylan Thomas, A Child’s Christmas in Wales

The earth rotates and the russets of late fall give way to white. And it is good.

    • Yeah, weird. One day we were sailing our boat..then, boom, the sun was suddenly setting earlier, it was cold on the boat and out of nowhere, I got out of bed in the morning and we had all this snow. Why? I wasn’t done putting my gardens to bed for the Winter! 🙂

      • You do have a boat? How lovely. I like sailing when I was young. (In warmer waters!)
Hadn’t thought about the garden. Putting straw on some plants?

      • Not this year. I was set to buy the straw.
Long, boring answer; in my neighborhood the leaves that fall first are tend to be from diseased trees so I never used that handy cover as I didn’t want my plants to become infected. These past two summers quite a few diseased trees were cut down. The first ‘crop’ of fallen leaves were maples, they tended towards health problems. The second crop that fell tended to be oak and the oaks made a nice blanket for the gardens.

I also realized when I was really zealous about pulling weeds and straightening up the beds before winter…I was ruining prime Bumble Bee real estate. I’ve learned to back off and relax my standards.

      • Haha! Relax is good. I hadn’t heard about “ill” trees, but it makes sense. And I hadn’t thought about using leaves to protect the garden. (I’ve never lived as high up North as you guys!)
        Stay warm.
