“Wind and Window Flower
WIND AND WINDOW FLOWER by Robert Frost
LOVERS, forget your love,
And list to the love of these,
She a window flower,
And he a winter breeze.
And on this 5th day of February my gift to you is this clematis climbing the walls of an old stone house. No ordinary vine this, this influential Clematis grows on a stone wall of The Robert Frost Museum. The museum, which is inside Frost’s Stone House in Shaftsbury, Vermont, was closed when we stopped by on the way to a camping trip further north in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Undeterred we walked the grounds in the gathering dark.
Robert Frost wrote his best work from this house. I don’t know if he sat by this particular window when he wrote “Wind and Window Flower” or if it was written for this particular flower but I was full of dreams and reverence that day.
But the flower leaned aside
And thought of naught to say,
And morning found the breeze
A hundred miles away.

Nicely composed photo (and love that red window frame) to go with a nicely composed Frost poem!
Thank you. I revere Frost’s work so it meant a lot to be able to see and walk where he lived, worked, rambled etc. It was disconcerting in that the world has beat a path, not to, but past his door. His home is now on a well traveled road to Vermont’s ski lodges and bed and breakfasts. It is so small and so easy to blow past while cruising in your car. Wonder what he’d think of that.
It is only when we slow down that we actually get to see what we have been missing in life. Love the poem and the photo. I will have to add his house on my places to see list.
Oh yeah, I want to back when I can go inside and ramble the fields a bit longer. Feel that karma! 😀
